Overview of space station spectrum licences
Spectrum licensing is available for space stations in all satellite services, with licences authorizing the radio service, the frequency band(s), the orbital location, and a coverage area.
Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) issues spectrum licences for a Canada-wide service area, including Canadian airspace and waters where the Radiocommunication Act applies.
Spectrum licences for commercial communications satellites (e.g. fixed-satellite services (FSS), broadcasting-satellite services (BSS), mobile-satellite services (MSS)) will typically be issued with a 20-year term. This term is based on 5 to 6 years to plan, build and launch a new satellite system or network, and 15 years of operation. For all other satellite systems and networks, ISED will establish a licence term on a case-by-case basis, based on the characteristics of each project.
