NCLL Spectrum Band Information

3900 MHz band

Non-competitive local licensing is initially being offered in the 3900 MHz band (3900-3980 MHz). This section of mid- band spectrum comes with decent propagation characteristics and is well suited for high-speed applications. This makes it ideal for rural broadband as well as a solid choice to support 5G wireless connectivity for applications including resource extraction and agriculture.

About the band

Spectrum in the 3900 MHz band is assigned in 10 MHz blocks, and each licence can use either a single or double block.

At the bottom end, the 3900 MHz band is adjacent to the 3800 MHz flexible use operations band (3650-3900 MHz), which is intended for 5G mobile broadband and fixed broadband services. Any licensees who choose block A1 (3900-3910 MHz) will need to operate on a no-interference, no-protection basis: they can’t cause interference to, and are not protected from interference from the 3800 MHz band.

At the top end, the 3900 MHz band is adjacent to a fixed satellite service band at 4000-4200 MHz. This band is for use by earth stations—satellite dishes—communicating with satellites.
