This figure is a graphic showing a set of curves that gives in dBµV/m the estimated field strength exceeded at 50% of the potential receiver locations for at least 50% of the time for a receiving antenna height of 9.1 metres and a transmitter effective radiated power (ERP) of 1 kilowatt in the lower VHF band (channels 2 to 6 and FM). Each curve corresponds to a distance (between 1.5 km and 300 km). Each of these curves gives, for various heights above average terrain (HAATs), the corresponding estimated field strength at the given distance of the curve. The vertical axis is the estimated field strength and runs from −20 to +110 dBµV/m. The horizontal axis is the HAAT; its scale is logarithmic and runs from 30 metres to 1600 metres. This figure shows how to calculate the interference zone as described in the example in annex F.
The protected station is a Class B station and is plotted on the left. Four field strength contours are plotted (54, 56, 58 and 60 dBµV/m).
The interfering station is a Class A station and is plotted on the right. Four interfering field strength contours from this station are plotted (34, 36, 38 and 40 dBµV/m).
Each contour from the protected station intersects the contour from the interfering station at two points (top and bottom), except for the 60 dBuV/m contour from the left and the 40 dBµV/m contour from the right which are tangent to each other.
The interference zone is shaded and drawn as follows:
- The right boundary of the interference zone follows the 54 dBµV/m contour of the protected station between the two intersections of the 34 dBµV/m contour from the interfering station.
- The left boundary follows the intersections on top and bottom of the 56 dBµV/m contour on the left with the 36 dBµV/m contour on the right then goes through the intersections of the 58 dBµV/m contour with the 38 dBµV/m contour.
- The top and bottom boundaries of the interference zone finally join together at the tangent point of the 60 and 40 dBµV/m contours.
