When soil and structures start to break down, it can have serious impacts on safety. Measurand manufactures sensor-based instrumentation that monitors those changes in real time. With the ability to collect 24-hour deformation data, their tools help operators detect potential hazards early and make proactive decisions regarding public safety. Based in Fredericton New Brunswick, these Atlantic-Canadian innovators are making a global impact from the Canadian Via Rail to the Port Said Tunnels in Egypt.
The Challenge: Accelerating business development at home and abroad
With a long-standing history with the Accelerated Growth Service (AGS), Measurand has experienced exponential growth since partnering with the program for its pilot launch in 2018. Early on, their Innovation Advisor took the time to get to know their team, understand the ins and outs of the business, and develop tangible steps to engage potential partners. Today, more than five years later, Measurand continues to benefit from the valuable connections developed through AGS.
With a primary focus on business development, working with government partners helped Measurand drive market research and put global expansion on the fast track. Over the last five years, the company has visited ten embassies, participated in roadshows and seminars around the world, collaborated with more than 20 trade commissioners, and now holds more than 20 patents globally with products sold in over 40 countries worldwide.
On top of the company's expansion abroad, back home in Canada, they used funding from AGS partners to open a new temperature-controlled testing facility that now allows them to run R&D initiatives year-round where they were previously limited to six to seven months. Measurand also used funding to invest in leadership training for staff and hire external consultants to review their management tools and technology, HR processes, and operational efficiency.

New Equipment Financing
Opportunities New Brunswick provided Measurand with up to 20% financing to purchase equipment for their new testing facility.
Support for research and development
Measurand used funding from NRC-IRAP to hire an MBA intern on a 9-week term to assist with ongoing research and development initiatives.
Support for international expansion
Support from various Global Affairs Canada programs helped Measurand fund market research, navigate sourcing and distributing, and generate new sales in countries across Asia, North and South America, Europe, and Australia.
Employee training grants
Funding from WorkingNB provided several opportunities for Measurand to enroll staff in leadership training and management development programs. Many of those staff members now sit in leadership positions within the company.
