The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) has published the IP Canada Report 2025, the 10th edition of this annual series. This report highlights recent intellectual property (IP) activity and trends in Canada and abroad by Canadians, covering patents, trademarks, industrial designs and plant breeders’ rights. It also includes special sections on IP data and research, focusing this year on IP and innovation in Canada and on patenting in wildfire mitigation technologies.
Highlights from the report
- Patents: In 2024, CIPO received 35,374 patent applications (−1% vs. 2023), with Canadian residents increasing their filings by 5% to 4,304. In 2023, Canadians filed 20,048 patent applications abroad (−2% vs. 2022).
- Trademarks: In 2024, CIPO received 68,672 trademark applications (−4% vs. 2023), marking the third consecutive annual decline. In 2023, Canadians filed 21,051 trademark applications abroad (−11% vs. 2022).
- Industrial designs: In 2024, CIPO received applications for 9,167 industrial designs (+1% vs. 2023), supported by record use of the Hague system. In 2023, Canadians filed for 3,365 industrial designs abroad (+30% vs. 2022), a historic peak.
