Guidance on NS exemption limits
Through this Notice, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) clarifies its position on nerve stimulation (NS) exemption limits as specified in section 6.2 of Radio Frequency (RF) Exposure Compliance of Radiocommunication Apparatus (All Frequency Bands).
In light of numerous inquiries and subsequent investigations concerning the various shapes of coils for NS exemption, this Notice is intended to provide guidance on which coil shapes qualify for exemption from NS testing.
The coil shapes in the categories listed below are applicable to NS exemption limits:
Planar shapes (e.g. square, rectangular, hexagonal, elliptical etc.)
Figure 1: Planar Square
Figure 2: Planar Rectangular
Figure 3: Planar Hexagonal
Figure 4: Planar Elliptical
Stacked rounded shapes (e.g. rectangular, cylindrical etc.)
Figure 5: Stacked Rounded Rectangular
Figure 6: Stacked Rounded Cylindrical
Figure 7: Cylindrical Coil
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Coil Inductors
Figure 8: SMT Coil Inductor
Please note that all other coils not listed in the categories above are not exempt from NS testing. These include, but are not limited to:
3-Axis SMT Coil (Not exempt from NS testing)
Figure 9: 2-Axis SMT Coil
Double D Coil (Not exempt from NS testing)
Figure 10: Double D Coil
Please be advised that, at this time, ISED will not be considering any additional NS exemption requests.
