The Scale AI Cluster, Canada's Global Innovation Cluster dedicated to supply chain artificial intelligence (AI), has fostered the development of a nationwide AI ecosystem, with hundreds of organizations cross-collaborating to invest their combined energy and resources into AI. The Scale AI Cluster is the crucial connector forging these linkages. The Cluster is the only national hub in the Canadian ecosystem, connecting players across the country, at all stages of the AI journey and throughout the AI value chain—from research and development (R&D) to full-scale diffusion.
The Scale AI Cluster discovered three actions were key to tangible success for the ecosystems:
- Connecting R&D to industry: The Scale AI Cluster connects Canada's R&D players to Canadian industry players and small and medium-sized enterprises that need this expertise; as these relationships develop, network effects knit the R&D community closer to Canadian start-ups and industry adopters.
- Promote AI adoption on both the demand and supply side: The Scale AI Cluster co-invests in business-led collaborative projects. These co-investments have been vital because they lower the initial financial risks for adopters of AI solutions by distributing the costs. In turn, these lower risks encourage demand-side industry players to adopt AI for the first time. The Cluster also succeeds on the supply side of the equation by encouraging service and solutions providers to be involved in industry-led projects.
- Drive broad AI diffusion: The Scale AI Cluster actively and regularly engages industry leaders to champion the benefits of implementing AI. The Cluster supports ecosystem members through their AI journey—from early engagement in workforce development to support in producing and deploying solutions. They also foster private investments in broad-based AI adoption, while enabling the upskilling of the Canadian workforce to equip people to function within AI-powered environments.
Thanks to these actions, the Scale AI Cluster has facilitated and supported more than 120 initiatives across Canada to date, within seven Canadian industries: agriculture, retail, manufacturing, mining, energy, healthcare, and transport and logistics.
