Toward $220 billion

2024-03-06

Over the past five years, the success of the Ocean Cluster has been a national driver and voice for the digital, sustainable and inclusive growth of Canada's ocean economy. By the end of 2022, the Ocean Cluster had developed a portfolio of 84 collaborative projects involving more than 240 partners. Ninety-six percent of these projects are led by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their total value is $390 million. The Ocean Startup Project alone has led to the creation of more than 100 new companies, 30 of which emerged from a single idea.

Outpacing the growth of the broader global economy, the ocean economy in Canada has untapped opportunity ready to be harnessed. In 2022, the Ocean Cluster launched Ambition 2035 – an ambition to grow Canada's ocean economy to $220 billion by 2035. This number would represent five times the economic benefit to Canada from the ocean economy. Canada's entire ocean sector has rallied to help deliver. This ecosystem activity speaks to the success of the Ocean Cluster as a coordinator and catalyst—nurturing Canada's ocean economy, spurring it forward, using it to make our country the best place in the world to start and grow an ocean company. The Ocean Cluster has focused its efforts on increasing the visibility of the ocean economy among Canadians and Canadian companies; bringing incubators and accelerators together to work collaboratively within the innovation ecosystem; connecting disparate geographic and disciplinary pockets of ocean entrepreneurship; on supplying access to mentorship and coaching to ocean SMEs; and expanding the ocean economy's pool of skilled workers.
