Uncloaking dark vessels

2023-03-15

Illegal fishing ships, known as ‘’dark vessels’’, roam the oceans destroying marine habitats, slashing vulnerable fish stocks, harming subsistence fisheries, threatening food security, and removing $23 billion each year from the global economy. The project Protecting Our Oceans fights this marine menace by combining satellite monitoring, artificial intelligence, big-data analytics, and data visualization techniques to identify dark vessels and track their movements. This new Canadian intellectual property is set to deploy around the world. Even better, project partners are improving and adapting it to halt polluters, combat human trafficking and strengthen border security.
