About the future of Canadian vehicles

The government is developing a made-in-Canada electric vehicle (EV) and battery ecosystem.

Canada has everything that is needed to build strong, resilient EV and battery manufacturing sectors, including:

  • a highly skilled workforce
  • land
  • green energy from natural resources, such as water, wind and sunlight
  • critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, graphite, copper, lithium and rare earth elements

Canada has made significant efforts to anchor critical segments of the battery value chain through a "mines to mobility" approach that will contribute to Canada's objectives in the fight against climate change. Jobs created through this approach touch on many segments of the EV and EV battery  supply chains, including mineral extraction and processing, battery and components manufacturing, EV manufacturing, and battery recycling.

The government is collaborating with stakeholders, including provincial and territorial partners, to support large-scale and transformative projects across the country. The Canadian Critical Minerals Strategy, for example, was developed in collaboration with provinces and territories and founded on engagement with industry, Indigenous business representatives, and other stakeholders working to build a stronger, more competitive mining sector.

The battery value chain

The battery value chain captures the step-by-step process to produce batteries for EVs. Learn about each step in the process.

Canada's Critical Minerals Strategy

Mines in Canada are well-positioned to provide the minerals needed for battery manufacturing. Processing of these minerals in Canada will provide added economic value and help ensure that the Canadian battery supply chain is sustainable and resilient.
