Course description
This 5-day course provides participants with the knowledge required to examine non-automatic weighing devices, such as point of sale systems, platform scales, overhead rail scales and vehicle scales. Topics will include the applicable sections of the Weights and Measures Act and Regulations, bulletins and test procedures.
A written exam will be administered at a Measurement Canada office on the last day of the course. Participants not receiving the required 70% passing mark may re-write the exam 30 days after the date of their unsuccessful attempt at a cost of $125.27.
In addition, the successful completion of a practical exam is required prior to being granted authority to examine non-automatic weighing devices as a recognized technician.
Course structure:
Online self-study portion: 1 day
The training session covers an introduction to Measurement Canada and relevant Sections of the Weights and Measures Act and Regulations.
Candidates have access to this part of the training session 21 days before the start of the in-classroom portion of the course. The link to the ISED learning platform is provided with the course registration confirmation. The course content and final exam must be completed and passed with a passing grade of 70% no later than the Thursday before the start of the in-class portion of the course. The closing date will be posted on the ISED learning page. Immediately after the online self-study portion ends, self-study material will be temporarily unavailable to allow results to be recorded. Candidates will receive an auto-generated pass, fail, or non-completion certificate.
Important notice:
Candidates who do not complete the course by the required deadline will be ineligible to attend the classroom portion and will not qualify for reimbursement. For further details, please consult the course policy.
As an example:
For a classroom course starting on the 23rd (blue), your registration confirmation and course link will be sent to you on the 2nd (green). You have between the 2nd (green) and the 19th at 11:59 p.m. (yellow) to create your online account on the learning platform and complete the online self-study portion. Your certificate of completion will be sent automatically by midnight on the 20th (orange) at the latest. The course will be temporarily unavailable between the 20th (orange) and the 23rd (blue). In addition, an email will be sent to the management representative on the 20th(orange) confirming participation or withdrawal from the classroom portion of the course.
Classroom portion: 5 days
The training session covers the relevant sections of the Weights and Measures Regulations, the specifications, the bulletins, the examination procedures and the enforcement policy.
Expectations
Participants are expected to review the course material, which will be provided three weeks prior to the start of the course. Participants must arrive on time, respect the schedule outlined by the instructors and are expected to participate in classroom discussions. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

Personal protective equipment, such as steel-toe boots, may also be required for practical demonstrations.
