The purpose of this project was to do a preliminary, yet real, evaluation of the measures put in place by companies since the coming into force of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, which gives clients access to the information companies hold on them. The goal was to determine the extent to which access is easy, fast and inexpensive and whether access to all of the information held by a company on a particular client is provided. Option consommateurs used the mystery shopper technique, with the help of consumers across Canada. It had intended to carry out 40 case studies among companies under federal or provincial jurisdiction, but in the end 29 accounts held by 11 investigators were analysed. The study looked at two groups of consumers. The first group comprised individuals who were already doing business with the companies selected. The second group was made up of new clients who became customers of the same companies selected in the first group.This document is available in the following language(s):
