Summary

This brief contains the elements of the consumer position advanced by PIAC during the course of the presentation and disposition of amendments to the Competition Act contained in Bill C-19, An Act to Amend the Competition Act and to make Consequential Amendments to other Acts ["Bill C-19"]. The purpose of this brief is to organize the consumer views in a manner that will be helpful in the event that the Government reintroduces this Bill or a successor piece of legislation. The brief will highlight the merits and shortcomings of Bill C-19 from the consumer perspective. It will outline the proposed amendments and discuss the principles that guide the consumer position on the subject areas of the amendment, as well as respond to other stakeholder concerns.
