Summary

A group of Canadian organizations – consumer groups and representatives of government and industry – have been working to increase consumer confidence in on-line purchasing by developing a Canadian code of best e-commerce practices for on-line merchants. The project proposes:
a) studying some existing certification bodies;
b) studying existing documentation on funding the start-up of such certification companies;
c) studying existing mediation and dispute settlement services for companies which decide to obtain e-commerce certification;
d) studying opportunities for recognition, mainly through standardization firms and certification authorities in other countries, etc.

In addition, given the work already carried out by the Union des consommateurs in this regard, this report also considers opportunities for certification in terms of the social responsibility of companies.
