Summary

This project involved four key research components, culminating in this report:

A Literature Review - A literature review was conducted to help better define the scope of the research and to develop a full picture of the home renovation marketplace, including looking at popular media and alternative service delivery frameworks.

Key Informant Interviews and Discussions - Key informants able to assist understanding of the marketplace environment were identified and interviewed.

Review of Selected Available Complaints Data - Ontario and Alberta provincial complaints data were reviewed, as well as information collected by a recent Consumer Protection study of vulnerable consumers' protection needs produced by the Consumers Council of Canada.

A National Omnibus Survey - Research House conducted a telephone survey for Consumers Council of Canada among a national random sample of 1,502 adult home owners comprising 757 males and 745 females 18 years of age and older, living in Canada.

A Consumers Council of Canada Public Interest Network Survey - The Consumers Council of Canada maintains a roster of active consumers who are willing to share their opinions and knowledge in support of research activities.
