Summary

The Canadian Association of the Deaf explores the experiences of deaf consumers in the financial sector to better understand the level of accessibility available to deaf Canadians in both in-bank and online banking services, as well as other financial institutions such as insurance companies, mortgage companies, and credit unions. This research includes surveys of the deaf community about their banking experience, as well as asking about financial fraud, payday loan companies, and personal finances self education.

The final report offers a wide range of recommendations for financial institutions to improve overall accessibility. It also seeks to establish the current baseline before the Accessible Canada Act, 2019 fully impacts the banks regulated by the Bank Act.
