Career Development Program

SPS is committed to the development of its employees. The EC Career Development Program (CDP) is a program for Economists and Policy Analysts that enables guided professional development and opportunities for career progression.

The primary objectives of the program are to ensure that SPS attracts, develops and retains the talent it needs to continue to deliver its internal services with excellence. Through the program, the employees acquire the necessary combination of knowledge, competencies and experience to succeed at each level. It also enables the sector management team to encourage development and rigorously assess participants’ performance and merit for progression, while respecting the public service staffing values of transparency, fairness and accessibility.

SPS Official Languages Initiative

The Strategic Policy Sector’s Official Languages Initiative promotes the visibility, adoption and use of Canada’s two official languages in the workplace, with the objective of making the Sector a bilingual work environment, a departmental leader in language training policy, and a workplace of choice within the public service.

Visibility—awareness initiatives for prospective and current sector employees.

Adoption and Use—full and part time language training, linguistic mentoring, library resources, and bilingual events.

SPS Young Professionals Network

The Strategic Policy Sector Young Professionals Network (SPSYPN) aims to enhance the development and participation of young professionals in SPS. Dynamic, open to new ideas and supported by senior management, the SPSYPN undertakes many activities, including

  • orientation for new employees;
  • networking events where young professionals can meet and exchange ideas with colleagues and managers;
  • training sessions on career development and other topics;
  • representation of young professionals’ interests on SPS committees;
  • participation in department-wide initiatives for young professionals; and
  • social get-togethers after work.
